Overview

Now Lama’s kindness this time has revealed

The foe that harms, the fourfold grasping at

The pure, the pleasant, permanence and self,

Who will not take the steps to stop all that?

A person who’s possessed of sense will not

Do down this short life’s enemies but still

Ignore the ones that last from life to life.

Is it not right to stop them with all skill?

~ Gen Lamrimpa

The Four Seals present the core philosophical tenets of Buddhism. They are:

  1. All compounded phenomena are impermanent.

  2. All contaminated things are suffering.

  3. All phenomena are selfless.

  4. Nirvana is true peace.

Whether or not someone is considered a Buddhist is the level to which they assert these four views. These are potentially deep understandings, with deep impacts upon our lives if truly taken to heart.

Whether things are impermanent is not just that they arise and pass away, known as gross impermanence, but understanding that in every single moment things do not remain the same, known as subtle impermanence.

That all contaminated things are suffering, is not just that we feel the suffering of physical or mental pain but understanding that our very unenlightened existence is in the nature of suffering, known as pervasive suffering.

That all phenomena are selfless is not just a conceptual understanding but when experienced directly is the wisdom that is the gateway to genuine happiness.

That Nirvana is true peace is also not just a conceptual understanding but it will be felt in our hearts as a true release, beyond the world. A conceptual understanding though will inspire renunciation, and reveals that it is possible for us to experience an end of suffering, spurring on our practice.

Join us on this course with Geshe Losel as we learn about the Four Seals, how to understand them, take them to heart and put them into practice in our daily lives. Geshe Losel is one of only a handful of Westerners who have completed the full Gelugpa Tibetan training receiving a Geshe title in 2006 from Drepung Loseling Monastery. Fluent in the Tibetan language, he is well placed to bridge this topic to a Western audience whether complete beginners or those with deeper questions.

The course will be inspired by a text called, A Glowing Light of Scripture and Reasoning, Lamp Illuminating the Essentials of the Four Seals that Authenticatethe the View, by Gen Lamrimpa Ngawang Phuntsok (cover photo), Translated by Geshe Losel.

About the Teacher

Geshe Tenzin Losel was born in mid-20th century Britain. He first met Buddhist teachings in England thanks to the exceptionally kind efforts of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa, reaching out to westerners. He left for India in 1990 for further studies and received full ordination as a Buddhist monk in the Tibetan tradition from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1994. He is one of the handful of Westerners trained for two decades in the traditional Tibetan way as a geshe. While a student at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, he attended many public teachings by His Holiness there. In 2006 he received his geshe degree from Drepung Loseling, the monastery where the late Geshe Damcho, founder of Lam Rim Wales also trained. After returning to Britain to care for his parents in their last years, he moved in 2018 to Nalanda Monastery in France. As well as teaching, he has been involved in translating vinaya materials, which deal with ethical conduct and vows, especially for monastics. In fulfilment of Geshe Damcho’s request to him to teach in his centres, he is now associated with Lam Rim Wales and Lam Rim Bristol.
